Gasparyan:

Armenian duduk
player, born in 1928. He is described as the "Voice of Persecution and
Longing". His main instrument, the duduk, is a double reed flute made by
apricot. It sound like something between the oboe and the clarinet. The
duduk is not very sophisticated, it has only a range of one octave, but
Gasparyan is. He is a real virtuous, and he makes magic with this little
flute.
He is something like a chameleon, performing with all kinds of musicians from the Kronos quartet, via Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, to Lionell Richie and Peter Gabriel. One day he is recording for the latest James Bond movie, the next he is at the 2000 Førde Folkemusikkfestival, in front of a small, critical folk music audience. EthnoBass was there (not at the James Bond set), and let me put it shorts. The melancholic, longing music was deeply moving. Tim Øsleby |
