Faiz Ali Faiz are the 7th generation of Qawwali musician in his family.
Qawwali music is sufi music, and plays an important
role in the religious life in Pakistan
and Northern India.
Faiz started as a professional musician in 1978. His uncle, Rehmat Ali Khan, used to play harmonium with the world star of qawwali music, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Faiz Ali Faiz are often called his inheritor. EthnoBass had the pleasure of hearing Faiz at the 2001 Førde festival in Norway. Each song song started calmly, in the lower register. Then the act moved up in pitch and in inesety. Faiz and his fellow performers gradually moved us up to and towards the limit, and maybe, to God. This was a very strong experience. It goes far beyond words. Let me put it this way: Faiz is the first man that has made me cry, without hurting me. |
