Calvin Vollrath is a "state of the art" fiddler and composer from Canada.
A music friend of him once said "if you can't dance to Calvin, you'd better
check your pulse". This statement says a lot about Vollrath and his art.
Vollrath is deeply rooted in the North American bluegrass tradition. This goes from catchy uptempo dance tunes, sometimes gipsy swing, "Grapelli-like" elements, to slower melancholic ballads or waltzes. EthnoBass has had the pleasure of listening to him at the 2001 Førde festival in Norway. He sure is a virtuous at his instruments. He is a great composer, with more than 200 songs, and he is a very friendly nice guy, talking about his fondness of pudding and other things everybody can relate to. I am afraid his music isn't "my cup of tea", but I can still recommend it. It is obvious that Volrath and hes fellow musicians have fun. The stage personal had to carry the pianoplayer of stage at Festival opening (the audience wouldn't let them go after their 15 minutes). His "beloved wife Rhea" is the best step dancer this author has "heard", ever! She is not of the highest stepdancers, but she is an impressive improvicer with a lot of delicate and catching rhythms. |
