El Naán El Naán
presents Código de Barros / Mudcode, released by Arc Music

Transforming Tradition - An Iberian Roots Project

From Palencia in the heart of Castile, El Naán explore the Arabic, Celtic & Jewish musical heritages belonging to the Iberian Peninsula. El Naán push Castilian folk music towards the 21st century, using artistic codes that reach both the older people – the owners of the legacy of traditional music – as well as younger people, with their poetic and evocative lyrics, very visual and dynamic staging and their passionate performances.

The music of El Naán is not a fusion but a musical archaeology. We have searched – both inside the DNA of the music of this cultural crossroads and inside ourselves – in order to create a project that is of and for today; tradition transformed into 21st century emotion .’ says Héctor Castrillejo, lyricist and videocreator of the band.

It's said about them:

"One of the great things that has happened to Spanish folk is the rise of El Naán... We attented their concert few days ago and we are still fascinated" Fernando Íñiguez, Tarataña - Radio 3, Spanish National Radio.

"A band that’s worth hearing live... Those of you who are over there, do not hesitate to go: you’ll see what can be done with much love and much soul!". Pilar Sampietro, Mediterráneo, Radio 3-RNE

El Naán’s artistic proposal starts out from Castilian traditional music and connects it with roots music all over the world, turning it into a global proposal. Their second album, Código de Barros, has been self-produced and first published in Spain thanks to a successful crowdfounding, and now it is published by the British label Arc Music, one of the main global references in folk and world music.

Código de Barros means mudcode, and it´s a words game with bars code, that's código de barras in Spanish.

El Naán’s proposal has attracted great interest in the national press, with appearances in the main Spanish newspaper, El País (interview and report and a new prior to the presentation concert in Madrid), including pictures, even twice in the same week. They have also appeared in national and international radio stations and specialized media.

The artistic proposal:

Their show combines traditional music, with codes and sounds recognizable by the audience, and other sounds and rhythms that have influenced the Castilian and Spanish culture, like the “round trip” rhythms that went and came from the Americas, and also the Arab and Oriental sounds. All this is set in a very beautiful staging, including theatrical elements, with interspersed performances of a rhapsode singing to the Muses and the pleasures of life; and visual elements, video-art projections…

Line-up:

Carlos Herrero: voice, bouzouki, Cuban tres | Héctor Castrillejo: lyrics, bard, videocreator | César Díez: electric bass |  María Alba: second voice, percussion |  Adal Pumarabín: percussion | Javier Mediavilla: electric guitar | César Tejero: sax.

Lyrics of Hijos del invierno (Children of the Winter), by Héctor Castrillejo

With the lights of January
that provide blue shadows
my little child will be born
under my sad roofing
The sunflowers glance
with their eye of cold
They look at me and remain silent
and I close my eyes
The children of Winter
lulled in blood
An ice lullaby
that your mouth melts.
Lineage of shepherds
born in the fog.
They have sad smiles
and the nails with soil. When all the sunflowers
closed their eye
When no one is looking at me

I will go to the horizon.

The children of Winter
lulled in blood
An ice lullaby
that your mouth melts.
Ice
Ice
your mouth made of ice
Ice
Ice
your mouth of ice.
